"Strength in numbers: how independent hospices can raise more income from voluntary and donated sources to fund their work" demonstrates how hospices are missing out in the national fundraising arena.

Hospice fundraising is strong where it is rooted in communities but the report confirms lost opportunities when it comes to not taking advantage of the economies of scale that come from a national operation. It includes several calls to action.

The Commission into the Future of Hospice Care sought the help of nfpSynergy, a research consultancy working in the not for profit sector, to consider ways in which hospices could generate income in the future. The recommendations are the result of a survey, interviews and an event which engaged hospices in thinking about future opportunities and challenges.

The report is divided into the following sections:

  • Changes in the wider world in terms of socio-economics, demography and technology and how that might affect hospices.
  • The results of nfpSynergy’s income generation benchmark for hospices.
  • Key issues for fundraising and income generation ranging from the importance of the right culture to the need for greater collaboration between hospices.
  • Recommendations for how hospices can raise more money.

This paper is part of a series of contributions to the Commission into the Future of Hospice Care. The aim of the Commission into the Future of Hospice Care is to help hospices look ahead so they can anticipate and meet the changing and growing needs of the communities they serve.
