Trustee Essentials
Our Trustee Essentials sessions are designed to provide new and existing trustees with an introduction to Hospice UK and our sector.
About the sessions
Serving as a trustee for a hospice organisation is different in many ways from serving as a trustee for other types of charities. Our Trustee Essentials sessions are specifically aimed at addressing these distinctions.
These virtual sessions provide valuable context to help trustees gain a clearer understanding of:
- Hospice UK's role
- how we work alongside local hospices
- our broader involvement within the sector.
Trustee Essentials sessions are conducted via Microsoft Teams. During each session, you'll have the opportunity to ask questions to our speakers and engage in meaningful discussions with your peers.
If you aren't able to attend live, session recordings will be made available to watch online.
How to attend sessions
In order to receive calendar invites to Trustee Essentials sessions, you must be a member of our Trustee Network. This network is open to any trustee from a Hospice UK member organisation, enabling people to come together to discuss the latest best practice in hospice governance.

We are aware that some trustees are not from the health and social care background and will therefore lack some key knowledge about the sector.
This session aims to bridge the gap and provide more information around the health systems (i.e. hospitals, social care, acute provisions) and how hospices operate within this setting. It will demonstrate the importance of regulation (for example, through the Care Quality Commission) and the role trustees play in it.
Time: 2:00 - 2:30pm
Speaker: Anita Hayes, Clinical Quality Lead, Hospice UK

Relationships with health boards (e.g. ICBs, Partnership Boards etc) are key to the running and funding of a hospice. This session will lay out the different partnerships that exist and how other hospices have approached these relationships.

Speaker: Annette Alcock, Director of Programmes, Hospice UK

This session will give you a better idea of the purpose and value of Hospice UK's data collection and benchmarking work. Our work in this area helps hospice boards see where they stand within the industry average and identify key areas of work. The session will act as a good introduction to trustees who haven't been involved in this work before.
Time: 5:00 - 5:30pm
Speakers:
- Craig Duncan, Chief Operating Officer, Hospice UK
- Annette Alcock, Director of Programmes, Hospice UK

This session will give new trustees an idea of our national campaigning work, how we work with politicians, and the impact of recent campaigns.
This will also cover the collaborative work between national and local hospices and demonstrate how Hospice UK supports local media work and how it feeds into the wider picture.
