In 2011, Help the Hospices established the Commission into the Future of Hospice Care, chaired by Dame Clare Tickell, to provide guidance, information and options for hospices in order to inform their strategic position and offerings in the next 10 to 20 years. In September 2012, having reviewed many of the challenges facing hospices, the Commission convened a day-long meeting of hospice care experts to explore those challenges in detail.

The expert deliberation produced a set of six key operating principles that participants believe are necessary for hospices and the hospice movement to prepare for the future. These principles include:

  • Developing strategic leadership.
  • Developing the capabilities of the hospice workforce.
  • Undertaking rigorous strategic analysis and planning.

This working paper reports on the experts’ deliberations and presents in detail the recommendations that they urge hospices and the hospice movement more widely to consider and implement.

This paper is part of a series of contributions to the Commission into the Future of Hospice Care.
